The Karachi Tree Repository
In recent times unsystematic and misinformed development in the city has resulted in a rise in the removal of mature trees from the landscape of the city. Another trend that has been observed is the excessive plantation of an invasive species Conocorpus due to its ability to thrive in local climatic conditions( insert reference related to fast growth and low water intake). This has upset the Eco-system biodiversity of the region. Hoping that the development efforts are not ill-intentioned, the Karachi Tree repository is a data bank created for the trees of Karachi to understand and explain their role in the well being of the region as well as guide development efforts to not harm them. Currently the following three sections have been created for this purpose:
Tree Census & Mapping
This section records the following data about individual trees in the city :
- Geo Coordinates
- ID number
- Population & Density
- Scientific name; Common name
- Trunk measurement; Tree height
- Photographs-Trunk; Leaf; Full Tree
- Impact of the tree in its vicinity quantified
- Conservation significance-Cultural; Climatic; Bio-diversity; Medicinal; Aesthetic/Genetic Value etc, of the individual tree.
Tree Profiles
This section records the following data to help identify different trees found in the city and their importance:
- Ecological status- Indigenous; Non-invasive; Invasive
- Tree family; Genus; Species; Common name
- Physical Characteristics/specifications- Fruit; Flowers; Leaves; Average height
- Soil and Water conditions
- Significance and impact of the Family; Genus; Species-in the following categories- Culture; Climate; Environment; Bio-diversity; Medicine; Food; Foraging
Tree Care & Conservation
This section records the following data to help spread basic and advanced tree care & conservation methods:
- Tree Care – tips regarding how to take care of trees
- Tree Education: Tree education module for primary schools; Trees and design; street tree related stakeholders study
- Tree plantation drives- Coordinating with NGOs and other tree plantation drives-knowledge sharing
- Tree Conservation- Laws and policies that exist and working on developing more to protect trees.
Tree Profiles
This section organises information and data regarding different tree species found in Karachi as well as an over view of their importance through the characteristics of the family and genus they fall under.
The tree profiles of Karachi have been organised according to three main categories- Indigenous trees which are species that are originally found and naturally grow in the region; Non- native trees which are species of trees that exist outside their natural environment as a result of human activity, both deliberate and accidental, and may not hinder or interfere with the survival of local species; And Invasive trees which are species of trees that exist outside their natural environment as a result of human activity while hindering and interfering with the survival of all other species.
They have also been organised according to their families and genus highlighting their ecological importance.

I always stayed away from the Swiss resorts. Every winter I went to local slopes or the ones in Austria. I never wanted to spend a fortune on skiing. Out of curiosity I turned to Neve Agency and I spent for skiing in Switzerland as much as I did in Austria, although the Swiss alpine décor would have deserved spending much more.
